ROCKWALL – Now we know why there are always so many vehicles parked by the Cotton Patch Cafe. We give it a perfect 10, based upon our superb experience there last week.
From the delicious, hearty Southwestern recipes made from scratch to the friendly, courteous service to the comfortable atmosphere, you really can’t beat Cotton Patch for such down-home food as chicken fried nation, grilled steaks and chops, garlic shrimp, blackened seafood, premium salads, heart-healthy entrees and steakhouse burgers. Plus there’s all those delicious appetizers – such as homemade soups and queso, bacon cheese fries and fried pickles – as well as a wide variety of fresh veggies and scrumptious desserts, including blackberry and peach cobbler with ice cream, Dr. Pepper chocolate cake and pumpkin crunch pie.
For our visit, we began simply with tasty dinner salads with all the right ingredients, light yeast rolls and sweet cornbread. That would have been enough right there to please our palates. We washed that down with not too tart, delicious raspberry lemonade.
After almost ordering the fish tacos, my wife was so glad she ordered the Grilled Cajun Duo – blackened tilapia filet with Cajun seasonings and grilled shrimp with crawfish cream sauce on a bed of seasoned rice. Not only did it look superb; she loved the taste. The four shimp order is priced at $12.99. With eight shrimp it’s $15.99.
I went with something more traditional – chicken fried chicken, made from boneless chicken breast, breaded by hand and topped with their delicious white cream gravy – served with a tower of mashed red potatoes, more gravy and green beans cooked with bacon. Honestly it was the best chicken fried chicken I’ve had anywhere. And I’ve tried it at a lot of restaurants. This particular chicken was not too thin and not too thick, very juicy and full of flavor. The seasonings made the breading very tasty. The portion was large enough I had to take some home but not so large that I felt overwhelmed when I first saw it on my large plate. It was priced right at $10.99. On Monday nights, a full-size Chicken Fried Chicken or Chicken Friend Steak is only $7.99 – what a deal!
We really didn’t have any more room for dessert so we took blackberry and peach cobbler home for later. Wow was it yummy! Now we know where to go for dessert! I liked the sweet blackberry better. My wife preferred the peach. You can’t lose with either. They were priced at $2.99 per serving. Add a big scoop of vanilla ice cream for just $1.49.
Cotton Patch Cafe began 25 years ago in Nacogdoches when Larry Marshall and Mike Patranella rolled up their sleeves, worked long hours and created a restaurant like no other at the time. The idea behind that first Cotton Patch Cafe in Nacogdoches was to create “a community restaurant that offered great food made from scratch, served by caring folks who are part of each community.” Cotton Patch also donates to hundreds of charities and causes each year.
Today Cotton Patch has 45 locations (and growing) in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. The Rockwall location is in the Rockwall Crossing Shopping Center at 909 East I-30, just off the I-30 South feeder road. It’s open daily from 11 am until at least 9 pm and later on weekends.
